Apricot Lane Farms Black #1 (36” x 78”)

To collect the pigment I used to create this piece, I visited Apricot Lane Farms, the farm made famous by the Neon Films documentary The Biggest Little Farm. There, I collected the bones of livestock animals that had lived their lives on a rotation of grass pastures, passed, and been reclaimed by the earth.
The use of burned bone in art predates written history. Bone Black as a paint pigment specifically has been found in prehistoric cave paintings, ancient Egyptian tombs, and Greek art dating back to nearly 1,200 BCE. It has been identified in everything from paleolithic stick figures to the works of the renaissance masters.
All paintings are shipped unstretched, rolled, and in a protective tube. This not only keeps shipping costs low, but it diminishes the likelihood of damage during transport. For other options please email mary.jones@christopherdulin.com.
