The Artist:
What if you intentionally made yourself the other, the one who doesn’t speak the language, the one who doesn’t understand the culture, the one with different skin color, eye color, hair color? What if you sought out the kind of discomfort most people strive to avoid? What if, after doing so, words failed, and art became the only way to convey the overwhelming generosity, depth of culture and transcendent beauty you experienced?
My name is Christopher Dulin. I travel to the far reaches of the world to live with and learn from its historic cultures. With a focus on indigenous communities and the earth pigments they have used for thousands of years, my resulting work exists at the intersection of anthropology and ancient spiritual practice.
Each piece I create is a paired gesture, bound by the same form. The sculpture serves as a snapshot of a personal interaction, a deity, a spirit, or an ancestor. The painting is an echo of that sculpture. It is a memory preserved in ancient earth pigment: pigment collected with reverence and hands-on guidance from the people who allow me into their world.
